Another fire broke out at the Turkish bakery Asya in Bergen op Zoom during the night from Friday to Saturday. According to a bystander, a fireworks bomb exploded before the fire. It is already the third time that the building on the corner of Kamperfoeliestraat and Ericalaan has been bombarded with fireworks.
The fire started around one o’clock on the night of Friday to Saturday. The fire brigade responded to the fire with several vehicles. The fire was quickly brought under control, but the building sustained significant damage.
The police are investigating what happened. Also on December 29, a fireworks bomb went off at the bakery, causing considerable damage. During New Year’s Eve, heavy fireworks were once again set off at the bakery and there was unrest in the neighborhood.
Mayor Margot Mulder therefore imposed a ban on gatherings at the building around the turn of the year until January 2. The bakery was fenced off.

Arsons and troublemakers
During the New Year, things went wrong in more places in the city. For example, cars and scooters were deliberately set on fire and the roof of a supermarket caught fire.
While extinguishing the fire, the fire brigade was hampered by thieves. Two business premises on Kruisakkers also went up in flames at the end of the year.
The mayor has launched an investigation into the events at New Year’s Eve. According to her, neighborhoods in the city have been neglected too much in recent years.
