The basketball players from Alba Berlin missed a surprise in the Euroleague. Despite a decent performance, the Bundesliga team lost 73:90 (34:37) to Turkish champions Fenerbahce Istanbul on Thursday evening.
After the 17th defeat in the 20th game, Alba remains at the bottom of the premier class. The best Berlin throwers were Gabriele Procida with 14 and Matt Thomas with 13 points. Coach Israel Gonzalez was able to rely on captain Martin Hermannsson again.
Alba quickly clearly behind – but then back again
Both teams are among the weakest offensively in the premier class, and so there were initially only a few baskets to marvel at. But Berlin’s throwing rate in particular was weak – especially from a distance.
At the end of the first quarter, the Berliners were clearly behind (9:16). But Alba improved defensively and so Fenerbahce scored points less and less. The Berliners fought back and equalized towards the end of the second quarter (30:30).
And Alba remained close on the favorite’s heels even after the break. At the beginning of the last section they even took the lead again after a long time (62:61). However, the hosts always had an answer and found their throwing rhythm again in the final phase. 162 seconds before the end, the deficit reached double digits for the first time (71:83) – and the Berliners ultimately left the floor as losers.
