A 31-year-old man from Meppel must do 40 hours of community service for destroying four cars in the Heinsiusstraat in Meppel. The man kicked and scratched the vehicles in a drunken mood on March 22.
A witness approached the noise and saw the man attacking the vehicles. The witness recognized the suspect. He shouted at the man: “Hey, you’re vandalizing my girlfriend’s car.” The other shouted back: “The government will pay.” In the meantime he pulled the windshield wipers off the car.
A local resident watched the scene from her living room. It was already dark, but the street lights gave her a good view. The suspect was arrested by the police. The man said he remembered little. But he didn’t deny it. He was sad and therefore had drunk too much.
The public prosecutor demanded 50 hours of community service for destroying four cars and a scooter. The judge could not determine that the Meppel man had also taken out his grief on the scooter. There was a windshield wiper near the two-wheeler. “But it could also have been thrown,” the judge said.
The judge spoke of a series of vandalism that caused a lot of unrest and nuisance. The man was recently sentenced for another vandalism to 80 hours of community service and a suspended prison sentence of one week. The judge took into account that these facts could also have been dealt with at that time.
De Meppeler must also pay compensation of 3,100 euros.
