What a surprise: the new right-wing SBS 6 news has started with half a million viewers, much more than expected. After just one broadcast, NRC opens the attack. “Gut TV!”

In Hilversum it is jokingly called the Bermuda Triangle of SBS 6: the hour between six and seven, because almost everything flops at that time slot. “We first had 6 Inside, then came De Goednieuwsshow and then Wat Vindt Nederland,” summarizes former newsreader Jan de Hoop as a sidekick in Renze Klamer’s talk show.

‘Nothing for SBS 6!’

It has always been the Bermuda Triangle, Jan also agrees. “I still fear that, because if you want to see the news you can go to NPO 1, where you have the Zesuurjournaal and EenVandaag. Then you also have RTL Nieuws en Editie NL and RTL Boulevard. People are very used to that and you now have to attract them to a new program.”

What grade does he give the show? “A 7, because it was well prepared, the content was correct, it also looks nice, but it is actually an elongated table where they do a talk show. In the beginning, those people did not respond to each other at all. It could be a good program, but I don’t think it is very suitable for SBS 6.”

What does Tina say?

Well, everyone was wrong about the viewing figures of Nieuws van de Dag, even TV authority Tina Nijkamp. She says in her podcast Tina’s TV Update: “Well, I’m really amazed at how many people watched, namely 533 thousand. A really striking amount. Never before has SBS 6 scored so well there. I have to be honest: I was thinking of 180 to 210 thousand.”

And that for the same reason that Jan gave: the fierce competition. “I was very surprised that it scored so well. The minute analysis also looks very, very good. Much better than 6 Inside at the time. The viewers are not running away and it seems that they are really looking forward to this program, so I have good hope for De Telegraaf and SBS 6 that it will remain that way.”

Nice start

The viewing figures provide a lot of admiration. Telegraaf reporter Jordi Versteegden speaks on X of a ‘nice start’ and media journalist Jarco Kriek says on

Raymond Mens, who participates in the program, talks about ‘nice figures’. He says, also on

NRC critical

Amber Wiznitzer, TV critic for the NRC, is extremely critical. ‘News of the Day is gut television with a lot of giggles’, reads her headline. She thought Fidan Ekiz was giggling a lot during an item about baby names.

The reviewer also criticizes Thomas van Groningen. “He was allowed to perform one of his favorite tasks that he performed until recently at Café Kockelmann (WNL): discussing a tweet from Geert Wilders.”

Trump Versteher

And what about Raymond Mens? Not to my taste either. She calls him a ‘Trump-versteher’. He joked that it will be a fun four years for him. “That made the whole studio giggle again,” says Amber.

It is ‘gut television’, she concludes. “I don’t know what else to do with News of the Day. So please let’s move on to something more fun.”
