A major boxing portal reports on a possible retirement of heavyweight superstar Anthony Joshua and cites anonymous sources from the scene. The ex-champion expressed himself very differently in distant Nigeria – but knows that the clock is ticking.
“I can’t stop now. I have to keep going until I reach my goal,” said Joshua, according to “boxingscene.com” during a visit to Lagos, Nigeria, his parents’ homeland.
The portal had previously reported on a possible retirement of the two-time heavyweight champion and cited unnamed insiders from the boxing business.
Looking back on 2024, “I think I could have done more and in 2025 I have another chance to do more,” Joshua said, emphasizing the importance of making the right moves. “I’m going to make sure I take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way. I’m going to keep going.”
The 35-year-old is aware that he won’t get too many chances to climb the heavyweight throne again. “Time is of the essence,” Joshua mused: “Time is limited. I just want to work more.”
Joshua vs. Fury is still the biggest boxing event
The Brit lost the IBF title fight against his compatriot Daniel Dubois in front of 98,000 spectators at Wembley in September. In the fifth round, Joshua was badly knocked out after a right counterattack by Dubois
In an interview with “iFL TV”, promoter Eddie Hearn named two options for his protégé in 2025: a revenge against Dubois and a duel with former world champion Tyson Fury. When asked about the long-awaited mega-fight against Fury, Joshua said: “We’ll see, let’s get in the ring.”
Although Joshua and Fury recently lost, a duel between the English heavyweight stars is still considered the biggest fight in boxing and could break financial records.
