A handful of burnt-out cars, damage to a school building, firefighters and police officers being bombarded with fireworks and a cat-and-mouse game between the police and troublemakers.

You can almost set the clock right away: every New Year, Zijdelwaard turns into a war zone in which even emergency workers do not feel safe. And this year was no different.

‘Bunch of troublemakers’

The mayor emphasizes that most residents have behaved properly, but that ‘a bunch of troublemakers have once again managed to ruin things for someone else’.

“In addition to material damage, they also made the work of our emergency services almost impossible during the night.”
