The Tilburg New Year’s fireworks show has been canceled for the third year in a row. Other places that want to ring in the year with fireworks, including Eindhoven and the Efteling, are also struggling with the bad weather forecast. Where will things explode and where will the plans be blown away?
Large fireworks shows were planned in Tilburg, Eindhoven and the Efteling. Partly with the aim of discouraging residents from doing stunts themselves and in the Kaatsheuvel fairytale park as part of a festive New Year’s celebration.
Tilburg
But bad weather conditions are once again throwing a spanner in the works for all organisers. In Tilburg, four shows were planned by the municipality, as an alternative to the otherwise fireworks-free municipality. At seven o’clock in the evening and at 12 o’clock at night there would be explosions in the Piushaven and in the Reeshofpark.
The earliest shows will still be decided on Tuesday morning, but the nighttime party is now definitely off the map due to the wind.
No alternative is offered. Even on January 1, the weather forecast still looks too bad. “But we are going to look at how we can do this differently in the coming years,” says a spokesperson for the municipality of Tilburg. “Ultimately, it is better to move further away from fireworks. In connection with the victims, with the environment, but also so that we are less dependent on the weather.” Laser shows, for example, are an option for that reason.
Eindhoven
This interpretation has already been in the picture in Eindhoven for some time. They hold an annual New YearsEhve event, with more than 25,000 revelers. Artists perform there, special effects can be seen and they have glitter machines. They wait until the last moment to make the decision.
“The advantage is that we are not just a fireworks show,” says a spokesperson for NewyearsEhve. “But you want to show the total picture to your spectators. And fireworks make it more spectacular.”
“If it turns out on Tuesday that the wind is still too strong to provide a safe fireworks show, the fireworks will not take place. But for now we are still building up full speed,” say the people of Eindhoven.
Efteling
Efteling waits for the green light until the last moment. “For now, the show will continue as usual,” says the park spokesperson. “We’ll keep an eye on it and really have to check the weather tomorrow before the show.” However, there are a number of alternative scenarios on the shelf to replace the pyro show. “A beautiful show with various show effects,” says Efteling. But what those show effects are remains a mystery.
