“I visit, for example, a hospital and a kind of nursing home. There I hand out the glasses. But if I meet someone on the road and they need glasses, I do that too. That’s done with all hands and feet because they don’t actually speak English. Then I imagine whether they need reading glasses or ones for long distances. Last time there was a woman from security who just got on the moped at minus 2.5.”
“I hand out glasses at hospitals and nursing homes, but also to people I meet along the way.” Els then explains that she hands out reading glasses, because the residents hardly speak English. “Then I show whether they need glasses for distance or near. Last time there was a woman who simply got on her moped at minus 2.5.”
The glasses that are taken to Vietnam are handed in by people to Els herself or to optician Lucien Walter. There the glasses are refurbished and measured for strength. Walter: “A lot of them come in. It’s great that they are still being used, otherwise they will go away. And we like being able to help, they really end up well.”
