Tennis professional Nick Kyrgios continues to confront the two top stars Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek due to their doping findings.
Nick Kyrgios continues his dispute with Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. The Australian confirmed at a press conference that he had never even thought about doping in sport in his life – not even when he was injured at the peak of his career and could have accelerated his recovery.
“When people say I’m disrespectful to the sport, I think someone like him [Sinner, Anm. d. Red.]”Who tried to cheat the process and didn’t manage to do it completely on his own, in my eyes the disrespectful one,” said Kyrgios.
Sinner is “number one in the world”, and he has never doubted that despite the numerous criticisms of the Italian. Nevertheless: “I think that the treatment should be fair for everyone. In my opinion, it was handled terribly in our sport. The fact that two world number one leaders were convicted of doping is disgusting for our sport.”
Doping cases in tennis are heating up people’s minds
Tennis high-flyer Sinner tested positive for the steroid Clostebol in the spring, but the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) only announced the doping findings months later. Sinner blamed one of his physiotherapists, who had used the drug himself before using it.
An independent court initially acquitted the 23-year-old, but the World Anti-Doping Agency protested against the proceedings. The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is currently dealing with the case.
The case of the current world number two Swiatek is also heating up tempers in tennis. The Polish woman was tested for the banned drug trimetazidine in August, but the results only became public much later. Swiatek was suspended for a month because, according to officials, the case was not serious.
Kyrgios is one of the harshest critics of Sinner and Swiatek in the tennis circus and has been calling for more transparency and fairer punishments since the cases became known.
