He wrote: “Without their commitment, this special event would not be possible. A strong sign of commitment and team spirit!” One day before the actual opening competition of the traditional jumping series, the Austrian Daniel Tschofenig won the qualification. Pius Patschke was the best German in sixth place. Read more about this here. There was also another record, which you can find out more about here.

“Different skiing”: German misses top placement

The Italian ski racer Federica Brignone won a giant slalom in Semmering for the second time this season. The 34-year-old, who was also fastest in the first run, was only eliminated in Killington, USA.

Sara Hector from Sweden completed the podium, 0.57 seconds behind, and New Zealand’s Alice Robinson. She was nine tenths of a second behind Brignone.

As the best of two German starters in the second run, Lena Dürr finished in 22nd place. “It worked out and was a lot more fun when you know that the slope is really nice. It’s a different kind of skiing,” said Dürr, who sees her strengths in the slalom on Sunday, to ZDF. Her teammate Emma Aicher was just ahead of Dürr after the first run, but then dropped out.

Federica Brignone from Italy is leading the second run of the World Cup giant slalom in Semmering, Lower Austria. The reigning world champion in combination is 0.15 seconds ahead of the Swiss overall World Cup winner Lara Gut-Behrami. Third is the Swedish Olympic champion Sara Hector, 0.24 seconds behind Brignone.

In the absence of superstar Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), Emma Aicher (Mahlstetten) and Lena Dürr (Germering) placed among the top 30 in the intermediate rankings and are therefore qualified for the final. Debutant Jana Fritz (Reutlingen) and Fabiana Dorigo (Munich) missed the second run (from 1 p.m. in the t-online live ticker).

The German hopes of a top result at this year’s Tour de Ski have suffered a bitter setback: Katharina Hennig, Olympic cross-country skiing champion and one of Germany’s greatest medal hopes, had to cancel her participation in the stage race. The 28-year-old from Oberwiesenthal explained on Wednesday that she could not compete for health reasons.

Hennig wrote on Instagram: “Unfortunately I won’t be able to take part in the Tour de Ski, my body isn’t up to it health-wise. My body isn’t up to it health-wise. But even though it was a hard decision, now the good news: I’m giving mine “My body has the time it needs to get healthy and then I have enough time to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Norway.” These will take place from February 25th to March 9th, 2025.

Former world-class skier Lindsey Vonn is about to return to top-class sport. According to her coach, Chris Knight, she is “a better skier now.” The 40-year-old is “better balanced than I remember her at the end of her last season,” the coach told the AP news agency.
