The podium finish in the opening leg of the Tour de Ski in the free sprint in Toblach touched the Finnish skier in a special way.
First came a wild gasp, followed by a big smile and then tears.
Jasmi to Joensuu the first podium finish of my career in the world cup came in a very sensitive moment.
– He hasn’t smiled much lately, Joensuu stated.
A woman from the Vantaa Ski Club said before Christmas that a five-year relationship Juho Simonen with is over.
– There are so many people here that it would certainly take the whole day to list who to thank. Family and everyone close to me and also my ex-spouse. However, he has been…
Joensuu’s sentence was interrupted and the tear ducts opened.
After a while, he returned to the unfinished comment at the request of Iltalehti.
– He has been there for five years and has seen my entire professional career. I know it’s not easy for him to be at home either. I am grateful for those five years, Joensuu commented.
The couple recently bought a new apartment in Rovaniemi.
– An apartment was bought three months ago, and I’m not going to leave it anywhere. It’s my home.
Joensuu and Simose share a common dog, Keijo, a Jack Russell terrier.
The ex-couple did not give joint interviews or pose for group photos.
– It was the will of both of them.
Sleep problems
Jasmi Joensuu had her emotions on the surface. Jussi Saarinen
Joensuu says that he has suffered from sleep problems after the divorce.
– I’ve been through things that are bigger than skiing. I have realized that skiing is the most important of useless things. You have to remember that this is just skiing and we skiers have the challenges of normal life. I’ve been through waves and I’ve noticed that there are really important people around when it’s been really difficult.
The skier said he hasn’t been feeling well.
– Skiing keeps you together and takes your thoughts elsewhere.
Joensuu hinted about his challenges even before he talked about it publicly on social media.
– My psychic coach Alice Vidjeskog already said at the World Cup in Davos that maybe this is the missing piece. Maybe this was it, Joensuu said and pointed to the fact that the best achievement of his career so far came immediately after the divorce.
New result and new style.
– There is nothing special or dramatic about it. Just dyed the hair. I’ve had darker hair before.
“I was able to show”
The Finns celebrated with a group Jasmi Joensuu’s achievement in the Toblach free sprint on Saturday. Jussi Saarinen
Joensuu has been close to the podium at the mc level already half a dozen times before.
– I was able to show everyone, and most of all to myself, that I can do this.
At the turn of the decade, Joensuu returned to his home country from the University of Denver. The professional career of the 28-year-old athlete began in the 2019–20 season.
– Including myself, many have believed in me and helped over the years. This is some sort of reward for that.
Before Saturday’s event in Toblach, success was not an overriding thought.
– To be honest, I didn’t have it in mind. Maybe it’s that when the thoughts are somewhere else, they’re not on skiing, so that can be a good thing too.
The Finnish rider was present in all his skis in the heats.
– It was really easy skiing. I was able to control the tip. I knew that I could control events from there. The final was really tough and it was close to being a perfect performance, Joensuu analyzed.
In the end, the USA Jessie Diggins got ahead. Swiss Nadine Fähndrich was third.
