Federica Brignone from Italy is leading the second run of the World Cup giant slalom in Semmering, Lower Austria. The reigning world champion in combination is 0.15 seconds ahead of the Swiss overall World Cup winner Lara Gut-Behrami. Third is the Swedish Olympic champion Sara Hector, 0.24 seconds behind Brignone.

In the absence of superstar Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), Emma Aicher (Mahlstetten) and Lena Dürr (Germering) placed among the top 30 in the intermediate rankings and are therefore qualified for the final. Debutant Jana Fritz (Reutlingen) and Fabiana Dorigo (Munich) missed the second run (from 1 p.m. in the t-online live ticker).

The German hopes of a top result at this year’s Tour de Ski have suffered a bitter setback: Katharina Hennig, Olympic cross-country skiing champion and one of Germany’s greatest medal hopes, had to cancel her participation in the stage race. The 28-year-old from Oberwiesenthal explained on Wednesday that she could not compete for health reasons.

Hennig wrote on Instagram: “Unfortunately I won’t be able to take part in the Tour de Ski, my body isn’t up to it health-wise. My body isn’t up to it health-wise. But even though it was a hard decision, now the good news: I’m giving mine “My body has the time it needs to get healthy and then I have enough time to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Norway.” These will take place from February 25th to March 9th, 2025.

Former world-class skier Lindsey Vonn is about to return to top-class sport. According to her coach, Chris Knight, she is “a better skier now.” The 40-year-old is “better balanced than I remember her at the end of her last season,” the coach told the AP news agency.

2,141 days after her last race at the highest level, Vonn will return to the World Cup this weekend in St. Moritz. Despite having an artificial knee joint, she plans to compete in two Super-G races.

Vonn ended her active career in 2019 – as the 2010 Olympic champion, two-time world champion and, with a total of 82 World Cup victories, one of the most successful skiers in history.

Ski star Mikaela Shiffrin may not return to the World Cup this winter. Due to complications after her fall injury, the American now indicated that a comeback was unclear. “I think if everything had gone perfectly and the drainage had simply been removed, we would have been pretty sure that the season would be possible,” she told the portal “skiracing.com”.

But her return depends on developments in the next few weeks and months, explained the exceptional injured athlete. She doesn’t have much pain and can walk slowly or climb stairs. But it is too early to say when and whether she will drive again this season.

Shiffrin fell during her home race, the giant slalom in Killington, at the end of November and suffered a severe stab wound in her stomach. She has been out since then. Last Thursday she had to undergo a “small unexpected operation,” as she announced on Instagram.
