Despite another cruciate ligament injury, 1. FC Cologne has extended the expiring contract with Luca Kilian. On Monday, the cathedral town residents announced that the new working paper is valid until 2026. Kilian celebrated his comeback with the U21 at the end of November after a break of several months and was substituted in the second game. The defender had to undergo another operation.

“We immediately promised Luca all the support he needed after his serious injury setback so that he could concentrate 100 percent on his recovery. For us, this also means that Luca does not have to worry about his professional future during the months-long rehabilitation phase ahead of him. Accordingly, his contract extension was a given for us. Now we wish Luca a lot of strength, willpower and positivity to return to the pitch stronger than ever before,” said sports director Christian Keller.

Kilian, who initially moved on loan from FSV Mainz 05 to Cologne in 2021 and then moved permanently the following year, added: “It’s nice to see that everyone here, whether things are going well or not, are supporting each other. And that’s why I’m very happy to stay here – I’ll give everything for my comeback and would like to attack again in the summer.” It means a lot to him to “have this support” in the current situation. He was very pleased “that FC signaled to me that they would extend my contract immediately after my injury.”
