After successful coach Rúben Amorim left for Manchester, João Pereira took over the reins at Sporting. But that’s apparently over now.
Turbulent weeks in Lisbon: After Sporting won the championship under former coach Rúben Amorim, played exciting football and was even considered by some to be the secret favorite for the Champions League title, things have been going downhill since his move to Manchester United. Under successor João Pereira, Sporting was only able to win one of four league games, only got four points and had to let arch-rivals Benfica overtake in the table.
In the Champions League there was a 1:5 defeat against Arsenal and a disappointing 1:2 against Brugge. The good starting position of perhaps even reaching the round of 16 directly was gone. Sporting is only 17th in the premier class.
Only in the state cup did things go well, both games were won. Nevertheless, according to a report in the Portuguese newspaper “A Bola”, Sporting has now taken action – and parted ways with João Pereira after just a month.
According to the medium, his successor will be Rui Borges, who is currently still under contract with Vitória de Guimarães. In the league, Borges and his team are in sixth place, but in the Conference League they are even in second place. Vitória de Guimarães scored 14 points in six games and was the only team other than Chelsea FC to remain undefeated.
Rui Borges has only been at the club for six months and came in the summer from Moreirense FC, a newcomer to the Portuguese first division, which surprisingly made it to sixth place under Borges.
According to “A Bola”, the 43-year-old is said to have an exit clause of four million euros in his contract with Vitória de Guimarães, which Sporting will probably want to draw on in the coming days. He should be on the bench in the derby against Benfica next Sunday.
