The mood of crisis in the German economy also has consequences for managers at the ailing car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz.

The company is canceling salary increases and home offices for its managers next year, a spokesman said. The goal is to make Mercedes-Benz Group (formerly Daimler) even more weatherproof and successful in the long term, said a company spokesman. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” had previously reported.

Optimizing the cost structure also involves reducing personnel costs, according to a letter to managers at the beginning of December. “We are continually reviewing our positioning. It is clear that we need to become an even leaner company overall.” Everyone in the company would have to contribute to this. Therefore, all managers worldwide from department heads upwards, as well as individual team leaders, should not receive a salary increase in the coming year. Bonuses and share programs should remain unchanged.

Compulsory attendance for managers from January

In addition, it is “the uniform expectation of all senior managers at Mercedes-Benz in Germany” that they will generally spend their working hours at their place of work from January 2025 onwards, the letter continues. In order to be able to respond better to challenges, mutual exchange in person is essential. According to the company, the decisions affect a four-digit number of managers worldwide.

Mercedes-Benz wants to reduce its costs by several billion euros annually in the coming years. The cuts are justified by the tense situation in the auto industry.
