Pius Paschke is jumping onto the podium week after week in the current season. But in Engelberg the German high-flyer experienced a small setback.
For the first time this season, the German ski jumpers missed the podium. Andreas Wellinger jumped to fourth place at the World Cup in Engelberg, making him the best athlete in national coach Stefan Horngacher’s team. The 29-year-old showed jumps of 128 and 140 meters, but it was just not enough for a place among the top three athletes.
The Austrian Jan Hörl secured victory. He beat his compatriot Daniel Tschofenig and the Swiss Gregor Deschwanden, who completed the podium at his home competition.
Karl Geiger also impressed with fifth place, while Pius Paschke, the leader in the overall World Cup, only came tenth this time. Paschke jumped 134 and 125.5 meters and was self-critical after the competition: “I’ve done eight very good ones out of nine competitions. Today wasn’t quite ideal,” said the 34-year-old on ARD.
Despite the disappointing result, the team is optimistic about the upcoming Four Hills Tournament. “Even Pius can’t always win. That’s completely normal in sport,” emphasized Horngacher. Paschke had already won five individual competitions this season and is still considered a great hope for the highlight after Christmas.
In the World Cup season so far, the German team was able to celebrate at least one podium finish in eight of nine individual competitions. Engelberg was a setback – but expectations for the tour remain high.
