The goalkeeper played 72 international matches and was one of the silver heroes of the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. Klaus Wöller has now died unexpectedly.

The German Handball Association (DHB) mourns the loss of Klaus Wöller, the former national goalkeeper and silver medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. According to a statement from the DHB, the 68-year-old “died unexpectedly”. Wöller played 72 international matches in his career and was considered a defining figure in German handball.

“Klaus Wöller has a permanent place in German handball history and will always remain one of our silver heroes from Los Angeles. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” explained DHB President Andreas Michelmann.

Former teammates were also affected. Uli Roth, captain of the 1984 Olympic team, said: “Klaus was one of the older players on our team and as such was a mentor and role model for us boys. We will miss him.”

At club level, Wöller celebrated great success with TuS Nettelstedt, with whom he won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the DHB Cup. For his achievements he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf, the highest sporting award in Germany.

After his active career, Wöller retired from professional sports and worked in the insurance industry. He lived with his family in Salach near Göppingen. With him, German handball is not only losing a successful athlete, but also a personality who was considered a role model for many.
