Florian Wirtz is the focus of Bayer and the national team. Now the Werkself have apparently managed to extend the contract with the top performer.
Florian Wirtz is a top performer at Bayer Leverkusen. Recently there has been repeated speculation about the 21-year-old’s future. A move to FC Bayern was also discussed. Now, however, the Werkself have apparently achieved a coup: According to the “Kicker”, the national player is said to have extended his contract. His working paper previously ran until 2027, but now he is said to have extended it by at least a year.
The deal is therefore a done deal. When asked by Sky, Bayer Leverkusen denied an agreement. According to the TV station, there will be no signature yet, but there will be a “very good exchange” regarding an early contract extension.
According to Kicker, the contract extension will make Wirtz the sole top earner in Leverkusen. His annual salary is said to be in the double-digit million range. However, the sum is less than what the attacking midfielder could have earned if he moved. According to “Kicker”, Wirtz feels obliged to thank his current club.
His father and advisor, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” in February: “Florian has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027. That will also roughly be the amount of time he will spend in Leverkusen.” He also emphasized that his son was “very lucky” that Xabi Alonso was his coach. “The right coach at the right time,” said Hans-Joachim Wirtz.
Wirtz came to Bayer Leverkusen’s U19 team in January 2020 from the U17s of 1. FC Köln and then became part of the professional squad in July of that year. Since then he has played 176 games and scored 52 goals. Last season, Wirtz won the league and cup double with the team.
