Things are not going well for Timo Werner at Tottenham. Now there is the next low point – and a public scolding from his coach.

Timo Werner has received the next sporting blow in the neck at English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. After the 1-1 draw in the Europa League at Glasgow Rangers, the 57-time national player was sharply criticized by his coach Ange Postecoglou.

“He didn’t play anywhere near the level he should have played at,” said Postecoglou: “When 18-year-olds play, that’s not acceptable to me, and I told Timo that too.” For the coach, Werner’s performance was a big mystery: “He is a German national player in the top division.”

According to the BBC, Werner lost the ball 16 times against Rangers, he was unable to prevail in any of his five duels and only 69 percent of his passes reached his teammates. Postecoglou replaced the 28-year-old at half-time.

“His performance in the first half was unacceptable,” explained the coach: “We don’t have many options at the moment. I need everyone to go out there and try to do their best.”

Werner is on loan to Tottenham from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig until the end of the season. This season, the attacker has only scored one goal in 19 competitive games. Werner often only comes on as a substitute. In the loan agreement, Tottenham has an option to permanently sign the Leipzig professional. It is currently considered unlikely that the club will use this clause.
