The Witcher 4 comes out in 2025, and will have Ciri as the protagonist

Surprise announcement at The Game Awards, where we discover that The Witcher 4 is much further along in its development cycle than expected.

The Witcher 4 will be released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series In addition to the earlier-than-expected launch window, the first trailer for the game showed that Ciri will take over the role of protagonist of the series, leaving Geralt of Rivia to his well-deserved retirement in the warm hills of his vineyard in Toussaint.

Of course, this also puts an end to one of the longest-running debates about The Witcher 3: which of the game’s endings is canon. Since Ciri has a very Witcher-like appearance and continues Geralt’s legacy in The Witcher 4, we can safely assume that she has neither disappeared nor been crowned empress. Unless this trailer, in which we see Ciri saving a sacrificial virgin from a village on the edge of a dark forest, is a huge red herring, of course.

Is there Geralt in The Witcher 4? —

Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, had previously declared that his character – and the protagonist of the first trilogy – would have a small role in The Witcher 4. And in fact the clip ended with a line recited by Cockle himself. With this announcement, 2025 promises to be even richer than before, adding to important launches such as Civilization 7, Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and GTA 6 – provided that no unpleasant postponements occur, of course.
