Shortly before Christmas there is great excitement at the handball second division team TV Großwallstadt. Because a player from the club is suspected of doping. As part of the investigation, searches were carried out at the accused’s apartment on Tuesday. The responsible public prosecutor’s office in Munich announced this in response to a BR request.

No details on ongoing investigations – Handball Bundesliga suspends Kretschmer

This is the 31-year-old captain Nils Kretschmer of the second division team. Initially, neither the club nor the public prosecutor’s office had confirmed this because of the ongoing investigations. A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office simply confirmed that an investigation was being conducted against the accused K. on suspicion of the unauthorized use of a doping substance.

But on Wednesday evening the confirmation from Kretschmer’s lawyer Felix Rettenmaier and the report from the Handball Bundesliga followed. Kretschmer was reportedly suspended “provisionally” due to suspected doping – according to information from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The Presidium of the Handball Bundesliga (HBL) decided this unanimously on Wednesday. The Großwallstadt captain is “excluded from any participation in competitions, training or other sporting activities” with immediate effect, according to an HBL statement. The exclusion applies until a final decision is made in the following disciplinary proceedings.

Successful as a handball influencer

That’s quite spicy. After all, Kretschmer is by far the best-known player in the second division handball team. As a handball influencer, he has around 416,000 fans on Instagram alone. The Lübeck native regularly gives a look behind the scenes or posts pictures from fashion shoots.

In 2012 he signed a contract with the Rhein-Neckar Löwen and won the EHF Cup title with the Mannheim team. After stints in Großwallstadt, TV Bittenfeld and HC Elbflorenz, he ended up back at Lower Franconia this season.

The association supports investigations and hopes for a quick clarification

According to the Bild newspaper, the searches took place in Obernburg (district of Miltenberg). This is also where Kretschmer lives. Bild also reports that substances were found, allegedly testosterone in low doses.

The club did not want to comment on the events and referred to its legal representation. “The Munich public prosecutor’s office is investigating a player from TV Großwallstadt GmbH on suspicion of violating the anti-doping law and the drug law,” said lawyer Steffen Salvenmoser, explaining that the investigation was not directed against the club, other teammates or other employees. “The TVG will support the investigation and hopes that the allegations will be resolved quickly,” it continued.
