“I looked at the end of the tunnel and thought I saw the devil,” Foxx said.
Jamie Foxx has revealed for the first time details about his hospitalization in April 2023, during which his life was in danger. In his new Netflix comedy special “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…”, the actor, comedian and musician talked about a false diagnosis, his 20-day coma and a brief moment in the afterlife.
Attentive nurse suspected misdiagnosis
Foxx announced that he was on the set of the film “Back in Action” (released in Germany on January 17, 2025) when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage that resulted in a stroke. At first, believing it was just a headache, he went to a doctor who gave him a cortisone injection. However, his sister was suspicious and drove him to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Doctors there determined the actual condition and immediately ordered an operation.
The 56-year-old was then in a coma for the next 20 days. After regaining consciousness, he could no longer remember the entire procedure and, among other things, had to learn to walk again.

Jamie Foxx didn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel
Without the surgery, Foxx said he would not have survived. During his unconsciousness he also experienced a transcendental episode, which, however, did not amount to an ascension to heaven. “I saw the tunnel. I didn’t see the light. But I was in that tunnel,” he said of his near-death experience. “It was hot in that tunnel. Shit, am I coming to the wrong fucking place? Because I looked at the end of the tunnel and thought I saw the devil…come on.”
“Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…” has been available on Netflix since December 10th.
