Neuro Geosteering uses artificial intelligence (AI) to integrate and interpret complex real-time information from the subsurface, autonomously guiding the drill bit through the most productive layer or “sweet spot” of the reservoir. Traditional geosteering operations require geologists to manually interpret this data to identify a well target, update the well plan and well trajectory and communicate this to the directional driller. Neuro Geosteering takes care of all these steps end-to-end – without human intervention.

“Autonomous neuro-geosteering is a remarkable industry pioneering achievement that is to drillers what the autonomous vehicle is to drivers,” said Jesus Lamas, President of Well Construction, SLB. “By using advanced cloud and edge AI capabilities, the system automatically selects the best route for drilling the well based on high-precision well measurements and aligns the well trajectory with the real conditions of the reservoir. By drilling more uniformly and more productive wells, our customers can optimize their field development plan while reducing operational emissions from drilling over the life of the asset.”

The autonomous neuro-geocontrol builds on the technological foundation of SLB’s autonomous neuro-directional drilling, in which boreholes are drilled according to the drilling plan to a defined borehole target. Autonomous neuro-geosteering goes one step further and integrates high-precision well measurements, ensuring safe placement of the well in the best part of the reservoir.

In Ecuador, SLB used autonomous neuro-geosteering to drill a 2,392-foot lateral section of an onshore well for Shaya Ecuador SA. During this process, SLB’s autonomous system performed 25 autonomous geosteering well trajectory changes, with each interpretation and decision cycle taking only seconds. By remaining in the most productive layer of the reservoir, the well became one of the top producers in the country.
