Nour Saadi, chairman of the Syrian women’s group from Emmen, speaks of “many reasons that give us hope and optimism”, in response to the fallen Assad regime. “Removing a major barrier from the lives of most Syrians offers hope for recovering from the destruction and building the democratic future we desire.”

Saadi was a resident of the Syrian city of Aleppo when she fled back to the Netherlands about ten years ago. She finds it ‘crucially important’ that Assad has made way for power in her home country. “For Syria, its neighbors and the whole world.”

In between all the developments, Saadi is in contact with other Syrians, including friends and family. There is still uncertainty about what the future will bring. For example, changes in power, interference from neighboring countries and possibly feelings of revenge can have consequences. “Yes, there is a huge concern,” Saadi concludes.
