The contract talks with Joshua Kimmich are currently one of the biggest challenges for Max Eberl at FC Bayern. Now the sports director has revealed how the negotiations are taking place without any consultants.

“The conversations with Jo are extremely pleasant because he is a super reflective person who has already experienced a lot in his life. It’s unusual, you have to say,” said the 51-year-old on Sunday at “Blickpunkt Sport” in ” BR” insight into his work.

Kimmich has not used a player agent for several years and negotiates his contract terms himself. Since his working paper expires in June, he faces a landmark decision.

According to Eberl, the exchange is primarily about the sporting perspective, but also about past failures and lost trust.

Because it is clear to the sports director that FC Bayern made mistakes in dealing with the leading player. “The contract is also about agreement. You have to talk about things and say if something bothered you,” he emphasized.

FC Bayern also needs to improve financially

“Some things were before my time, some I was there for. I tried to explain that to him. Now we have drawn a line in the sand and are looking forward,” continued Eberl.

From Bayern’s perspective, Kimmich should extend his contract in the long term and become a figurehead for the club. He is already considered Manuel Neuer’s designated successor as captain.

But the 29-year-old is apparently a tough negotiator not only when it comes to sporting matters. “Of course at some point it also comes down to financial matters. But that’s what makes Joshua outstanding, he doesn’t need an advisor,” admitted Eberl. “He knows exactly what he wants.”

It is still unclear whether FC Bayern can ultimately convince its leading player to stay. However, Eberl hopes that the pendulum will swing in Munich’s favor.

“He has options, that’s out of the question. He should check everything out. And I hope that his heart will give him the final impulse to sign with us,” he said hopefully.
