There is a lot of activity in the BAUFORUM at TH Lübeck: Families, friends, graduates, experts and university members examine the students’ final theses from the summer semester of 2024 at the opening of the exhibition “Bauforum.Profile”. “Congratulations on your very personal success,” says the mayor of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, Jan Lindenau in his greeting to the graduates. “If you can look back on Lübeck as the basis of your professional life, that ultimately makes a city and a mayor very proud,” adds Lindenau.

SCHÜTT Prize award

A total of 84 students graduated from the TH Lübeck in the bachelor’s degree programs in the summer semester of 2024 architecture, Urban planning, Civil engineering, Sustainable building technologyas well as in the master’s courses architecture and Civil engineering. After a welcome by the Vice President Prof. Frank Schwartze and the Dean of the Department of ConstructionProf. Sebastian Fiedler, as well as the mayor’s greeting, Oliver Schuldt (SCHÜTT company) honored the best theses in civil engineering with the SCHÜTT Prize. The Lübeck construction company presents the award.

Structures designed to withstand earthquakes

“Earthquakes are an emotional topic. The tragic example in Turkey and Syria in February 2023 showed that simple measures would have prevented dire consequences,” says graduate Feras Abbas, who received the first SCHÜTT Prize for his master’s thesis. The main aim of his work was to explain the basics of earthquake design according to Eurocode 8 in conjunction with the corresponding national annex for Germany for reinforced concrete buildings. This should allow conclusions to be drawn about the extent of the destruction in Turkey and Syria. The graduate is already using his expertise in his job in Ascheberg at KSK Ingenieure.

The second prize went to Sebastian Busch (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) for the work “On hydrogen-induced stress crack corrosion of tempered prestressing steels” and two third prizes went to Weinan Yu (Bachelor of Civil Engineering, “On the stabilization of glued laminated beams with regard to flexural torsional buckling through coupling purlins and the connection with coupling purlins). Screws”) and Bastian Franzenburg (Master of Civil Engineering, “Determination of the load-bearing capacity and the Deformation behavior of a modular climbing, play and swing system under tensile load).

The productive city

One of the first graduates in the Bachelor of Urban Planning is Lena Marie Schulz. In her bachelor’s thesis she dealt with a neighborhood that is to be created in Itzehoe under the idea of a “productive city”. The planning area consists of three conceptual focuses: the creative, the innovative and the collective district. “The special thing was that we were able to solve a real planning task. I had a lot of fun highlighting the comprehensive urban planning analysis with visual design elements,” says Lena Marie Schulz.
