Local residents were startled awake on Saturday night by an explosion at an apartment on Sonseweg in Eindhoven. It is not the first time that ‘crazy’ things have happened there and that does not improve the feeling of safety. “There used to be fireworks, but these are really big ones,” says Bauke, who lives in the flat.

The damage after the explosion in the apartment building is extensive. The windows are broken and the ceiling and wall were damaged. Bauke woke up from the explosion on Saturday night. “You often hear popping, but it was quite close now. Only later did I notice what was going on.”

The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but Bauke suspects that it was something related to fireworks. “I don’t know what kind of fireworks exactly, a Cobra or something,” he says. And according to him, this incident is not the only time something has happened in the neighborhood. “There has already been a shooting and recently the door was kicked in. Then a camera was hung.”

“It is a sign that society is changing a bit.”

Bauke therefore hopes that the explosion was out of wanton behavior and not that it was aimed at a specific person. “It gives a bit of an unsafe feeling. What matters to me is that people are safe. The damage will be repaired,” he says. “It is a sign that society is changing a bit. These are very big blows.”

Apartment resident Paul also says that unpleasant things have been happening more often lately. “The door was open the other day. Someone was shot in front of a car once. And a car crashed into the door once. It’s nice here,” he says. He himself is not that scared and he doesn’t think about moving. “It’s not nice, but it will all be fixed again.”
