Everton FC and Liverpool FC were actually supposed to meet in the Merseyside derby on Saturday. But the game is not taking place now.
A few hours before kick-off, the Premier League game between Everton FC and Liverpool FC was canceled. The home team announced this in an official statement on Saturday morning. The game was supposed to have kicked off at 1.30pm at Goodison Park.
The reason for the cancellation is the bad weather in Liverpool. The club statement said: “Following a Security Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park, attended by officials from both clubs as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council, it was decided this morning to postpone today’s game […] “As safety in the area is threatened by strong wind gusts and a yellow warning for strong winds remains in force until 6 a.m. Sunday morning.”
The club apologized to the teams’ supporters for canceling the game. We know that this is “very disappointing, but the safety of the fans, staff and players is the top priority.” Information on when the Merseyside derby will be rescheduled will be available soon.
Great Britain is currently being hit by Storm Darragh. This had already raged over Liverpool on Thursday. Afterwards, footage emerged showing Everton FC’s new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, which is still under construction. The heavy rain flooded the arena. Masses of water rushed down the stairs (read more about this here).
In terms of sport, Saturday’s game would have been an opportunity for Liverpool FC to further consolidate their lead in the Premier League. After 14 games, the “Reds” are seven points ahead of their first two pursuers, Chelsea and Arsenal. Series champions Manchester City are still two points behind, only fourth.
Everton FC is again fighting against relegation. The “Toffees” are currently five points above the line.
