Processing the transfer ban: 1. FC Köln separates from Jakobs

Bundesliga team sees responsibility

As the first step in the internal processing of the transfer ban by the world association FIFA, 1. FC Cologne has separated from its sporting advisor Jörg Jakobs. “The termination is part of the processing of the transfer ban that was imposed on 1. FC Köln,” explained club president Werner Wolf in a statement: “The role of Jörg Jakobs in the transfer of Jaka Cuber-Potocnik, in which he was the management at the time 1. FC Köln GmbH & Co KGaA advised us, in our opinion we do not allow further cooperation as a sporting advisor to the board.”

The club explained that the cooperation had already ended, and the contract ended on April 30, 2024. The club also promised: “The exact circumstances surrounding the transfer of the Slovenian football talent are currently being processed. The results will be presented in a few weeks.”

Jakobs joined FC in July 2012 as chief scout and has since worked in various positions up to and including sports director. During Potocnik’s transfer, the position of sports director at FC was vacant; Jakobs was a sports advisor.

The Cuber-Potocnik case: 1. FC Köln is not allowed to make any player transfers

Potocnik’s former club Olimpija Ljubljana had accused the Cologne team of inciting the then 16-year-old player to move. FIFA sentenced FC to a transfer ban. The Cologne team went to the Cas International Court of Arbitration for Sports, which confirmed the verdict. FC was not allowed to sign any players in the winter and will not be allowed to do so next summer either.
