… better and better!
The 1977/78 First Division season is now fully available in the Transfermarkt database. That season saw one of the greatest sensations in the history of English football. Promoted Stories Nottingham Forest won the first and only championship trophy in the club’s history. Manager Brian Clough’s team, who had previously led Derby County to the title, only suffered three defeats and ended the season seven points ahead of runners-up Liverpool FC.
The England record international player Peter Shilton was named player of the season after the keeper only had to reach behind him 24 times and thus became the most important building block in Forest’s title win. It was the only championship in Shilton’s great and long career.
Defending champions Liverpool consoled themselves by winning the European Cup again. The Reds defeated Club Brugge 1-0 at Wembley Stadium thanks to Sir Kenny Dalglish’s golden goal. In the EFL Cup there was another big duel with champions Nottingham, but here too Liverpool suffered a defeat in the final replay (0-1).
Ipswich Town fell from third to 18th place in the table compared to the previous year, but were unstoppable in the FA Cup. Coach Sir Bobby Robson’s team won the first and to date only FA Cup trophy in the club’s history in the final duel against Arsenal FC (1-0).
In by far his best season of his career, Bob Latchford from Everton FC was crowned top scorer in the First Division with 30 goals. Dalglish finished third with 20 goals in his first season in England. The Scottish attacker impressed with his reliability and was on the pitch for over 90 minutes 125 times in a row for Liverpool FC in the league; it was only in his third season that he was substituted prematurely on the last matchday.
