Good news for Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Detroit Lions wide receiver will now take part in the Pro Bowl Games after initially coming away empty-handed in the NFL All-Star Game.
According to NFL circles, St. Brown is replacing Eagles star receiver AJ Brown, who withdrew due to injury. St. Brown was surprisingly not taken into account in the election, even though he is one of the best slot receivers in the NFL. Instead of him, the NFC this year chose CeeDee Lamb (Cowboys) and Brown (Eagles) as starters and Mike Evans (Buccaneers) and rookie Puka Nacua (Rams) as backups.
The election, which is decided by fan, coach and player votes, was surprising because St. Brown, who had been among those chosen last year, was not taken into account. How strange this decision is is also underlined by the fact that St. Brown was voted into the All-Pro First Team. However, this election will be conducted by media representatives from the Associated Press.
St. Brown set career highs with 119 receptions, 1,515 yards and ten touchdowns in his third season in the NFL. This placed him third overall in the league in receiving yards behind Tyreek Hill (Dolphins) and Lamb, and second in receptions together with Hill. He only had three players ahead of him in touchdowns (Evans, Hill, Lamb).
NFL: Lions win division
St. Brown won the NFC North with the Lions, earning Detroit’s first division title in more than 30 years. It was also only the second time that they managed to get into the NFC Championship Game, recently narrowly losing against the San Francisco 49ers.
The other nominees for the Pro Bowl are:
- EDGE Jermaine Johnson (Jets) for EDGE Khalil Mack (Chargers)
- RB Jahmyr Gibbs (Lions) for RB Christian McCaffrey (49ers
- OG Kevin Zeitler (Ravens) for OG Joe Thuney (Chiefs)
- FB CJ Ham (Vikings) for FB Kyle Juszczyk (49ers)
The Pro Bowl Games consist of skill competitions that take place on Thursday and a final flag football game between the stars of the AFC and NFC on Sunday (live on NITRO from 8:15 p.m.). The venue is the Camping World Stadium in Orlando/Florida.
