Matthäus exclusive: DFB has to deal with Klopp

Jürgen Klopp has announced that he wants to leave Liverpool FC in the summer. If record national player Lothar Matthäus has its way, the German Football Association now has to deal with the former BVB coach.

Lothar Matthäus advises the DFB to consider Jürgen Klopp as a future national coach despite the announced break. “Not least because, in my opinion, Julian Nagelsmann will probably no longer be available after the European Championships,” said the 62-year-old exclusively to RTL/ntv and sport.de.

Last September, following Hansi Flick’s dismissal, Julian Nagelsmann was given a contract that ends after the home European Championship. Only after the tournament do both sides want to hold talks about whether the cooperation will be expanded. A lot will probably depend on how successful the former Bayern coach is with the DFB team at the European Championships.

Matthäus wants to see Klopp back in the Bundesliga

Jürgen Klopp had meanwhile declared that he would not take a new job in the football business after leaving Liverpool FC. The 56-year-old needs a break after all the grueling years on the sidelines. “Kloppo” also made it clear that he could rule out ever coaching a club other than Liverpool FC in the English Premier League.

Lothar Matthäus would love to see the long-time head coach of Borussia Dortmund back in the Bundesliga anyway. “And there is only one club…” said Matthäus, referring to his former club FC Bayern. However, Thomas Tuchel is under contract with the German record champions and the working paper ends in the summer of 2025.

Jürgen Klopp has been linked to FC Bayern several times in recent years – as is well known, a commitment to Säbener Straße has not yet taken place. After stints at 1. FSV Mainz 05 and BVB, he moved to Anfield Road for Liverpool FC in 2015, with whom he won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.
