The city of Hamburg wants to honor the late football idol Uwe Seeler with a street at the Volksparkstadion.
As the Abendblatt reported on Friday, Sylvesterallee in the Altona district is to be renamed Uwe-Seeler-Allee this year. The Senate commission wants to decide this “soon”.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 19, almost two years after Seeler’s death.
The honorary captain of Hamburger SV and the German national team died on July 21, 2022 at the age of 85. Seeler is also an honorary citizen of the city of Hamburg; in 1960 he won the championship with HSV and the DFB Cup in 1963.
An oversized bronze foot of the idol has stood in front of the second division team’s stadium since 2005 as a monument in honor of the 1966 runner-up world champion.
