Fewer reports of vehicle theft, Emmen is an outsider

Vehicle theft was reported less often in Drenthe last year. The police received another 276 in 2022, a year later there were 267 reports of a stolen car, motorcycle or moped.

This is evident from figures from the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence and Expertise Center (LIV).

Most reports of vehicle theft came from the municipality of Emmen (127). The number increased there compared to 2022, when the police registered fewer than 100 reports. An increase of 30 percent. The largest loot in Emmen consisted of mopeds and scooters, which fell prey to the thieves’ guild 71 times.

Logically, another large municipality, in this case Assen, is in second place when it comes to the number of thefts. Last year there were 35 strikes in the provincial capital, although there was a sharp decline compared to the previous year. Then a further 63 reports were made.

In smaller municipalities, it is more difficult to search for reports of vehicle theft. For example, the counter in Westerveld remains at 1, in Borger-Odoorn at 2.

Another rural municipality has seen the most explosive growth when it comes to stolen vehicles. Last year the police recorded 11 reports from De Wolden, compared to 4 a year earlier. In percentages this means a growth of 175 percent.

The Dutch police received a total of around 20,000 reports of vehicle theft last year, and in 2022 this will still be more than 22,000.

In just over half of the municipalities, the number of stolen vehicles decreased last year compared to 2022. Of the largest municipalities, this number fell sharply in Enschede, Tilburg, Haarlem and The Hague, among others.
