Top earners hardly play anymore

Daniel Ginczek was a starter at Fortuna Düsseldorf at the start of the season until he lost the regular place to Vincent Vermeij and later also the role of backup to Jona Niemiec. On the last eight match days of the first half of the season, the veteran played five minutes, which is why the signs are now pointing to farewell six months before the end of his contract.

The former DFB junior moved from VfL Wolfsburg to Düsseldorf in January 2022, where he is reportedly a top earner with an annual salary of 900,000 euros – including bonuses. Ginczek played a total of 46 games for the Rhinelanders and contributed ten goals and five assists. At Fortuna, its market value fell by more than half, from 1.2 million to currently 500,000 euros.
Update 6:18 p.m.: According to new information from “PictureGinczek’s new club has been decided: he will join the relegation-threatened third division team MSV Duisburg. Accordingly, his contract with Fortuna will be terminated on Saturday. The attacker will receive a severance payment of 200,000 euros – which corresponds to half of the outstanding salary until the summer. Fortuna saves 200,000 euros through the early separation.
Before the turn of the year, coach Daniel Thioune gave the impression that Ginczek would continue beyond the winter. He told “Bild”: “It was the case last summer that some people tended to perhaps write him off. He played a brutally good preparation and rightly fought for the starting place. Now injuries have set him back. But after last summer, when I was a little more critical and skeptical, I realized: Daniel Ginczek should never be written off!”

Fortuna, however, was active in the transfer market on Tuesday and brought Christoph Daferner on loan from league rivals 1. FC Nürnberg – an anticipation of a possible Ginczek separation. Daferner was signed with a purchase option, which reports put in the high six-figure range.
