The 18-year-old man from Leek who was arrested on New Year’s Day after the death of 52-year-old Bert Suurd from Leek was released on Wednesday evening.
Suurd was involved in a confrontation on the street about half an hour before his death. The police investigation shows that the 18-year-old was involved in the confrontation. Suurd allegedly confronted the young people for throwing fireworks at his dog. The youths then allegedly attacked the man.
Minor injury
According to the investigation, minor injuries were found on Suurd’s body. The conclusion is that that cannot have led to his death. A clear cause of death cannot be given. The Public Prosecution Service emphasizes that previous reports suggesting that Suurd died after being seriously beaten are incorrect.
Camera images have been secured and viewed for the investigation. In addition, a number of telephones were seized.
Young people die under impression
The police have now interviewed all people who were present at the incident. This includes the young people from the group of which the suspect was also a member. The witnesses and the suspect were very impressed by Suurd’s death.
The Public Prosecution Service sees no reason to detain the 18-year-old any longer. He remains a suspect. No more arrests are expected.
