Rummenigge downplays Champions League opponents Lazio

On Monday, FC Bayern were drawn a comparatively average opponent, Lazio Rome, for the round of 16 of the Champions League. Former Munich player Michael Rummenigge doesn’t expect miracles from the Italians.

With the exception of Paris Saint-Germain, the really big names weren’t available for selection anyway; after all, FC Bayern went into the raffle as group winners and could therefore only face a group runner-up as the next hurdle.

Instead of PSG or the in-form Inter Milan, it was Lazio Rome, who are currently having a very difficult time in Serie A. So it’s no wonder that Michael Rummenigge predicts Bayern will make it to the quarter-finals.

The German record champions probably “at least secretly breathed a sigh of relief,” wrote the 59-year-old in a guest article for “Sportbuzzer”.

Coach Thomas Tuchel’s team is “the clear favorite” and will “not let the butter be taken away from them,” announced the younger brother of Bayern supervisory board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Rummenigge: FC Bayern “almost always there” in big games

Rummenigge sees clear advantages for FC Bayern in all parts of the team.

“Lazio Rome is currently only eleventh in the table in Serie A and is not exactly spreading fear and terror this season. As a result, the Italians should rely primarily on their defense against Munich and hope for the best in the game,” he speculated former national players.

Rummenigge continued: “The best scorer in recent years has usually been Ciro Immobile. But the 33-year-old former Dortmund player is no longer scoring as regularly this season as we are used to from him.”

Even on an almost perfect day, the Lippstadt native sees no realistic chance for Lazio. “Especially since Bayern are almost always there when something really matters,” emphasized Rummenigge.
