Lilian Marijnissen lost seven elections as SP leader

Lilian Marijnissen’s career in national politics seems to be over. On Saturday, the politician from Oss announced that she will stop as party leader and as a member of parliament of the SP. She recently lost as SP leader for the seventh time in the elections.

The last time the Socialists won the House of Representatives elections was in 2006 under Jan Marijnissen, the father of the current party leader. That win in 2006 was a big one. The SP then went from 9 to 25 seats. In the years that followed, fewer and fewer voters chose the Socialists.

The party only retained its seats in the 2012 elections. In all other parliamentary elections to date, the SP has had to accept a loss.

Also looking at the elections at European, municipal and provincial level, the SP under Lilian Marijnissen has not yet won an election. She has been party leader since the end of 2017. She then took over from Emile Roemer from Boxmeer.

“That’s up to the party.”

The predicted outcome of the elections worries SP leader Lilian Marijnissen. “With this result, I do not see that we will have a more social Netherlands,” she said at her party’s election meeting in Amersfoort in an initial response to the exit poll.

Marijnissen did not comment on her position, now that the SP has lost another election under her leadership. “That’s up to the party.” She added that she is still combative.

“It’s a shame we lost four seats.”

The chairman of the party, Jannie Visscher, says: “It’s a shame that we lost four seats. That’s probably because people have chosen strategically. I am shocked by the PVV’s win. It has a number of positions that we have difficulty with, because it excludes groups.”

The election campaign often focused on themes that the SP has been putting on the agenda for years: such as the excesses with labor migration and social security. To the surprise of political commentators and the party itself, however, the socialists were unable to capitalize on this.

‘Where were you?’
“Yes, hello, where have you been in recent years?” Marijnissen said in the initial phase of the campaign to other parties that were suddenly concerned about insecurity, while according to the politician they were partly to blame for the cause.
