Minus 15 degrees: Cross-country skiers defy arctic cold

At the first competition in Lapland in northern Sweden, 70 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the athletes also had to brave temperatures of minus 15 degrees. Victoria Carl achieved this best in the German team.

The team sprint Olympic champion in Beijing finished in a shared ninth place, over a minute behind. Katharina Hennig, who feels more comfortable in the classic style, had to settle for 20th place. Sofie Krehl was impressive in 15th place, as was debutante Helen Hofmann in 28th. Lisa Lohmann was 39th, Katherine Sauerbrey 46th.

Can Hennig and Co. also perform well in Sweden?

At the opening weekend, Hennig and Carl made a good impression with several placings and the top ten. In similar icy temperatures in Ruka, Finland, Hennig finished tenth in the sprint, while Carl came eighth over 20 kilometers. In the 10 km race in the classic discipline, Hennig and Carl finished fifth and sixth.
