‘The brain behind the horrific robbery at Mien Graveland was off the radar for months’

Jacky W., the man who was the mastermind behind the violent robbery at Mien Graveland in Helmond in 2014, was missing for months during his leave. The ED announced this on Saturday. The man had cut his ankle bracelet while on leave.

W. had told his two companions that the 86-year-old woman kept a lot of money in the house. He also drove them to her house. There, the two men pretended to be employees of an energy supplier. That’s how they entered the house.

Horribly beaten up
Graveland started screaming when she didn’t trust the situation. She was then brutally beaten by the robbers. “There were broken ribs, facial fractures and incised tie wraps to the bone,” the attorney general said earlier. “She was then left to her own devices, tied to a table leg.”

The 86-year-old woman was found hours later by her son and died in hospital shortly after. W. ran off with the two robbers, but their loot was disappointing. There was no large amount of money in the cash box they had taken with them.

off the radar
W. was sentenced to eight years in prison. The other two robbers were sentenced to 15 and 10 years in prison. W appealed against his sentence, but the Supreme Court announced earlier this week that he had been correctly sentenced to eight years in prison.

In the wake of that decision of the Supreme Court, it emerged that W. was eligible for temporary release in December 2020 and that he cut his ankle band outside prison. He then disappeared from the radar for more than eight months. He was arrested again in August 2021.

‘This is an extra blow to the relatives’
Attorney Simone van Schaik, who represents the Graveland family, speaks in the newspaper of ‘an extra blow to the next of kin, on top of the suffering that the family has already suffered from the death of Mrs Graveland’.

W. could be charged with cutting his anklet. According to the ED, W. risks that he will no longer be eligible for parole as soon as two-thirds of his sentence is over.

The Ministry of Justice and Security did not respond Friday to questions about the disappearance of W..
