Cancellation of a cup game? FCB can probably breathe a sigh of relief

FC Bayern must continue to wait for a final decision as to whether the second round game in the DFB Cup against 1. FC Saarbrücken on Wednesday evening (8:45 p.m.) can take place as planned. After another inspection of the site, there is now a clear trend.

“The measures introduced to make the pitch in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigsparkstadion playable are having an effect; the pitch has dried out significantly. Representatives of the state capital, the DFB and 1. FC Saarbrücken discovered this together during an inspection of the pitch,” the city of Saarbrücken announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The club and the DFB currently agree that “there is currently no reason to cancel tomorrow’s DFB Cup game,” according to the statement. Ultimately, referee Frank Willenborg has to make the final judgment on site. From an organizational point of view, there was no reason to intervene, it was said.

Heavy rain led to the cancellation of the third division game between Saarbrücken and Dynamo Dresden last Sunday. By aerating the track, all puddles were successfully removed in the last few days.

The weather forecast also makes the hosts optimistic. There was hardly any rain on Tuesday night, and no further precipitation is forecast for Wednesday. The game has been sold out for weeks with 16,003 spectators.

FC Bayern had announced that they would not leave for Saarbrücken until the day of the match due to the unclear situation. From Bayern’s perspective, a cancellation of the cup encounter would not be desirable due to the busy schedule with games in three competitions. A move to another stadium was not organizationally possible.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel complained again about the situation on Tuesday. “It could also be that we travel and can’t play – then we have a double disadvantage. Then we have to make up for it at some point and still have the strain of the journey in our bones.”
