Half-time conclusion:
Break in Gelsenkirchen – and FC Schalke 04 goes into the break with a 1-0 lead against Hannover 96. Karel Geraerts’ team is not yet showing the desired defiant reaction to the debacle at KSC at all levels. After a strong start, the right side of the defense came under pressure in particular against the lightning-fast Derrick Köhn and was saved several times by goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann. Lasme’s goal shortly before the break (42nd) gave the team the lead, as S04 showed themselves to be very courageous and combative going forward. Hannover cannot maintain the pressure against the Knappen in the meantime and must improve again offensively if they do not want to accept a setback in the fight for the promotion ranks. It’s about to continue!

There are two minutes on top of that! Will FC Schalke 04 go into the locker room with a 1-0 lead?

Almost the equalizer as an answer! After a chip pass from Derrick Köhn, Voglsammer has a free opportunity to score and is denied by Ralf Fährmann. But shortly afterwards the flag is up.
44′
1:45 p.m
That wasn’t exactly what was announced, but you also have to admit that the home team’s mindset in midfield is right and that, despite all the uncertainty in the defense, the fighting spirit is there and they let the fans drive them on. They appreciate this with chants.

13:42
Tooor for FC Schalke 04, 1-0 by Bryan Lasme
The lead for Schalke! After the free kick comes from the center circle to the right wing, Hannover defends the following cross from Matriciani very poorly! In the middle, Karaman goes for a header, but his attempt hits the back of his head, which makes the goal possible: Lasme takes the rebound from the five-pointer with a volley and fires it powerfully to the bottom left, making it unstoppable for Zieler!
41′
13:42
After Voglsammer pulls Drexler to the ground in the center circle and Lino Tempelmann falls in another situation, the latter hits his teammate in the head with his foot as he falls. But things continue after a short assessment by the rule keeper.
40′
1:40 p.m
Tempelmann brings the corner flat and short into the box. On the baseline, Karaman wants to move back into the half-space, but a 96-leg is in between. You can do it like that.
39′
13:39
So far there hasn’t been much to come from the game for Schalke. Is something going over the next corner?
37′
13:38
With a strong save, Ralf Fährmann prevents the deficit! From his own half, Derrick Köhn receives a long ball from ex-national player Marcel Halstenberg on the left. Tomáš Kalas can only run after him and Köhn shoots from a tight angle, forcing the hosts’ keeper to dive down. But the goal wouldn’t have counted because Köhn was very close to being offside.
35′
1:35 p.m
The many fouls disrupt the flow of the game – illustrated here with the example of Dominick Drexler against Enzo Leopold in the center circle.
33′
13:33
Stefan Leitl’s team is putting more and more pressure on the Royal Blues and is desperate to take the lead before the break. The people of Lower Saxony feel the uncertainty in the ranks of Schalke.
30′
13:31
The ball fidgets in the Schalke net! Tempelmann misplaces the ball against Kunze and then things happen quickly: The Hannover team’s six shoots from 20 meters, hits the leather on the left inside post and from there the ball bounces into the net with no chance for Ralf Fährmann. But it remains 0-0 because the referee saw a draw against Tempelmann in this situation.
29′
13:29
Ouch! Tobias Mohr comes up against Louis Schaub with his open sole and hits both the ball and the opponent. But the referee doesn’t show a card, which leaves the Hanoverian in disbelief – and not entirely without reason, as one or two players have already been sent to the shower prematurely for such a foul.
26′
13:27
Schalke were able to clear the subsequent free kick effortlessly, but the fast Derrick Köhn almost intercepted a back pass from Mohr to Ralf Fährmann. The Schalke goalkeeper was just paying attention and pushed the ball out of bounds – but that certainly didn’t help the nerves of either the fans or the players.

Yellow card for Derry Murkin (FC Schalke 04)
The new signing from England sees a yellow card for a foul against Voglsammer and no longer understands the world.
24′
1:25 p.m
Short break in the game: Bryan Lasme fell in the duel against Arrey-Mbi, but can quickly continue.
23′
13:24
In the final minutes, FC Schalke 04 barely managed to free themselves from their own half. Offensive actions are currently lacking and the right side of the defense reveals gaps.
21′
13:22
On the other hand, Lino Tempelmann sprints free once again in this intensive game. Louis Schaub takes a risky approach and plays the ball away into the touchline.
20′
13:21
96 presses for the lead! Cedric Teuchert gets the ball to the left of the penalty area and sprints inside. Ralf Fährmann has to hit his shot from an acute angle with his fingertips. A Schalke defender is there in front of two Reds ready to take a shot!
19′
1:20 p.m
After a stopping error in Marcin Kamiński’s own defensive line, things are almost getting tricky in the Knappen’s half! But the Pole knows how to quickly correct his mistake with a successful tackle.
18′
13:18
Schalke is swimming! Marcel Halstenberg caught the corner ball completely free on the five-meter line! The former international doesn’t get enough pressure behind the ball and then misses the ball by half a meter. Lucky for the home team in this situation!
17′
13:17
The corner is cleared, but Schalke can’t get the ball out in the end. Again Matriciani has to tackle Köhn on the left wing and this time Tempelmann helps him out. Another corner!
16′
13:16
After an undisturbed cross across the entire width of the field, Derrick Köhn gets the ball again on the left, but this time he is left behind in the duel against Matriciani. It continues with a corner for Hannover and applause for the Schalke defender.
13′
13:14
Louis Schaub is through on the right, but he is left behind in the running duel against Derry Murkin. Schalke have to be a little more orderly in their backward movement if they don’t want to come under pressure early on.
11′
13:12
Shortly afterwards, Marcin Kamiński is required in Schalke’s defensive line: he uses his full legs to block Andreas Voglsammer’s shot.
11′
13:11
Hannover increases the tempo: Cedric Teuchert is not offside after a lob from the half-space and has space, but then clearly misses his shot in front of the edge of the penalty area.
10′
13:11
Derrick Köhn plays far too easily to Matriciani on the left side of the baseline and can cross unchallenged in the penalty area! But Cedric Teuchert missed in the box.
9′
1:09 p.m
In the first few minutes of the game, Schalke 04 were very robust in their duels and started quickly after winning the ball. Hannover defends well and builds up its game slowly and systematically.

13:08
The first chance for Schalke 04! After Tempelmann wins a duel in the middle, Bryan Lasme runs wonderfully free in the penalty area and receives the pass from the half-left position. Zieler has to come out and stretch himself in order to shorten the angle significantly and prevent the possible lead.
6′
1:06 p.m
After Cedric Teuchert moves inside in front of the penalty area, he passes it to Derrick Köhn on the left wing. But his flank then sails past friend and foe into the touchline.

By the way, the referee for this game is Timo Gerach. He is accompanied by Patrick Kessel and Tobias Endriß on the sidelines, Mitja Stegemann in the coaching zone and Katrin Rafalski in the video cellar.

That’s a bit far for a direct attempt, but Enzo Leopold lobs the ball onto the left post from a central position. There Marcel Halstenberg misses in the box and it continues with a goal kick.

On the other hand, ex-Bielefeld Voglsammer takes a free kick against Kaminski after he wrestles him to the ground in a duel for the ball.

Early on, Lino Tempelmann takes a free kick for the home team from the right half of the field, but it ends up in the wall. Schalke stopped the counterattack after Jannik Dehm started to sprint and was disrupted by a foul from Murkin.

The tension in the Veltins Arena is rising! Samuel Dick reports on today’s game for you. Have fun!
12:41
“A thousand friends who stand together. Then FC Schalke will never go down.” That’s what the Knappen’s club song actually says, but lately there’s been a lot of excitement in the ranks of the otherwise loyal and passionate fans. The record against today’s opponents definitely gives reason for hope, as the Knappen have won all of their last four competitive meetings, most recently 2-1 in front of their own crowd in the promotion season. The last defeat against Hanover dates back to August 2017.
12:31
96 coach Stefan Leitl sees no reason for personnel changes in his team. He trusts the same first eleven as in the 2-1 win against 1. FC Magdeburg.
12:23
Let’s get to the lineups for today’s game. Karel Geraerts saw a desolate performance from his team last week. This resulted in six changes in the starting lineup: Timo Baumgartl and Thomas Ouwejan were replaced by Derry Murkin and Henning Matriciani in the defensive line. Ron Schallenberg takes the place next to Lino Tempelmann in the double six position, thus displacing Paul Seguin from the squad. There is also rotation at the front: Tobias Mohr, Dominick Drexler and Kenan Karaman are given preference over youngsters Assan Ouédraogo, Yusuf Kabadayı and second division record goalscorer Simon Terodde.
12:13
The situation is different at Hannover 96: Lower Saxony’s dream of returning to the top ranks of German football after two rather mixed seasons is alive. The 2-1 win against Magdeburg meant they were able to stay in touch with the top ranks – a hat-trick today and they would be level on points with the current leader, Fortuna Düsseldorf.
12:03
Schalke’s new coach, Karel Geraerts, certainly had a completely different idea of the debut: instead of the expected defiant reaction, the Royal Blues went down 3-0 at Karlsruher SC. The targeted direct re-promotion is no longer an issue, it is now more about not being passed down, as has happened to some other clubs – most recently Arminia Bielefeld last season. The gap to the first non-relegation place is now five points.
