Peter turned this restaurant into the hotspot of Zoetermeer: ’We now even do happy hour’

It’s been five years since Peter died Family restaurant took over in Zoetermeer. In recent years he has given the business a metamorphosis and tried to make it a real asset to the city center. And he succeeded. “Mainly thanks to a great team: without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Peter started his catering adventure years ago at Pavarotti in Zoetermeer. That restaurant belongs to his daughter and son-in-law. “I helped them with the preparation and then spent two years on the shop floor,” he says. Before that, he worked in the industry for years, but working at Pavarotti revived his catering dream of having his own business. When part of the Family restaurant was for sale, he seized the opportunity and took over the business.

From snack bar to restaurant

Family was first mainly popular with the nightlife crowd. “We were open until early in the morning and sold a lot of snacks,” says Peter. That was no longer possible due to corona. But Peter and his team managed to make adjustments. He gave the business a metamorphosis with a fresh new interior, a beautiful conservatory and a new menu. Family is no longer open at night, but is a popular hotspot during the day for young and old. “From families wanting to have lunch to older people having a glass of wine: we see everything here.”

Something for everyone

The Family menu is therefore very extensive. You can eat classics such as pancakes and stew, but also steak on flatbread, prawns or tenderloin. “Our menu is extensive,” says Peter. “We want to be there for everyone. And preferably for a great price.” Family has recently also been open for drinks, including a fun happy hour, on Fridays from 9:30 am to 10 am. “We want to better match the atmosphere here on Stadhuisplein,” he says. Peter is absolutely happy with the location in the Stadshart. “It is a lively environment and Family fits in well.”

To grow

Peter’s catering dream has come true. He doesn’t want anything else anymore. “Even when I was working in another sector, I already had this idea in the back of my mind.” He is also very proud of how he has been able to improve and grow Family. “I wouldn’t have been able to do that without a strong team of permanent employees. I am very lucky to have these people around me,” he says. Is he already secretly dreaming of expansion? “My wife won’t let me have another business,” Peter laughs. “Then I’ll never be home again. But do more? I certainly want that. We hope that with the drinks we will take another step towards growth.”
