Freiburg’s long-running favorite
The end of the term of office of one of the longest-serving coaches in the Bundesliga is apparently approaching. Christian Streich, who has been on the sidelines at SC Freiburg since January 2012, spoke about his thoughts in an interview with “11Freunde”. “I feel like I’m getting older. The strength is dwindling, it’s just foreseeable,” explained the 58-year-old (quoted via “Kicker“).
“I find myself thinking more and more often: How much energy does the players still have? And when I realize that it’s no longer enough and that someone younger is needed to get to the players, I’ll stop,” said Streich. The UEFA Pro license holder usually extends his contract with SC year after year – the last time this was the case was last March. Volker Finke still holds the record for the longest term in office in Freiburg. In order to catch up with the 75-year-old, Streich would have to remain coach for 1,529 days – as of October 24th. Or to put it another way: a little more than four years. Then prank would be 62.

Of all the Bundesliga coaches, only Heidenheim’s long-running favorite Frank Schmidt has been there longer: over 16 years. And the 49-year-old’s contract runs until June 2027. No matter how things end for Streich at SC Freiburg – another club will probably not appear on his CV again. A change is “no longer an option” for him.
The best season under the club was 2022/23, when they finished fifth with 59 points after 34 match days. In 2015/16 the SC played in the 2nd league for a time, but stuck with the coach and managed to return to the Bundesliga directly and confidently. While Freiburg’s squad was worth 65.8 million euros when Streich started out, today it is listed at 172.5 million euros. The Breisgauers are currently eighth in the upper house.
