In a new featurette for “Barbie,” released to coincide with the film’s release on Blu-ray and multiple digital platforms, the film’s cast and crew reveal that one of the film’s most beloved characters was inspired by David Bowie.
Margot Robbie explained that “Weird Barbie”, played by Kate McKinnon, would be unthinkable without the famous look of the British singer, who wrote not only music but also fashion history.
“Greta described ‘Weird Barbie’ in the script as a cross between David Bowie and a hairless cat,” Robbie said in the featurette. which made its way online via “Entertainment Weekly”..
The weird Barbie as a symbol of the fate of many Barbie dolls
There’s another reason why McKinnon’s character’s hair appears a little disheveled and her face is very painted, besides the memory of Bowie, as director Gerwig noted.
“The ‘Weird Barbie’ is really the Barbie that you play with too much,” says the 40-year-old in the short film. “You brush out her hair and then decide to cut it off to see what happens if you set it on fire and paint her whole face. You make them do the splits and try to change the way they dress.”
Above all, the director wanted to show what the actual fate of many Barbie dolls looks like – according to Gerwig, she should therefore seem “funny and wise”. And be a bit like David Bowie.
