The quake struck at 11 p.m. (local time) on Friday near the town of Ighil in the High Atlas, about 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakech. It had a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale and was at a depth of 18.5 kilometers.
The affected provinces are al-Haouz, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant. Buildings have collapsed or damaged in several places. People also spent the night outside.
