Co-favorite Coco Gauff has reached the semifinals at the US Open. The American lost only two games in the entire match against Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday (September 5th, 2023) and won 6:0, 6:2 after 1:07 hours.
The 19-year-old local hero also benefited from the fact that Ostapenko, who had defeated the defending champion Iga Swiatek from Poland in three sets in the round of 16, was completely unnerved, especially in the first set. The number 21 in the world rankings made 15 so-called unforced mistakes, in the end it was 36 points that she more or less gave Gauff.
After the disastrous first set, which lasted only 20 minutes, Ostapenko recovered a bit. In phases in which she could have turned the match around again, she didn’t stand a chance against Gauff, who was very concentrated and consistent.
Now against Cirstea or Muchova
The sixth-placed in the world rankings is in the round of the last four in one of the four Grand Slams for the second time after the French Open 2022, when they only failed in the final at Swiatek. There she meets the winner of the game Soreana Cirstea (Romania) against Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic).
