To be clear right away: I am against the introduction of compulsory helmets for cyclists.

As a motorcyclist, I naturally put on a full-face helmet before every ride. And that’s not all: I also wear protectors, safety clothing and a fluorescent vest.

As a cyclist, however, I make a new decision every time: Am I traveling with children (role model function)? Am I driving on main roads (safety)? Or do I only use the 200 meter cycle path to the bakery?

I want to continue to make my own decisions about how and when I take the risk of road injury while riding my bike.

And one more thing: As a cyclist, I don’t want more cars on the streets. But the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) fears that. He predicts that when helmets become compulsory, bicycle use will decrease.
