John Varvatos becomes Chief Design Officer at Under Armour

US sporting goods retailer Under Armor Inc. has announced the appointment of John Varvatos as Chief Design Officer.

Varvatos, who will also join the brand’s board of directors, has been an advisor to Under Armor since spring but will now lead the design department for the brand’s entire portfolio of apparel, footwear and accessories. He will begin his new role on September 11th.

In an interview with US trade magazine WWD, which announced Varvatos’ appointment, the designer said that this new role was decided after meeting Under Armor founder Kevin Plank.

Varvatos explained that before accepting the position, he had already worked with Under Armor on projects such as designing a premium golf collection as well as items in other product categories.

Varvatos has established himself as one of the leading designers for menswear and womenswear, having previously worked at companies such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, where he held the position of Head of Menswear Design.

He also launched his own eponymous brand, which was acquired by Lion/Hendrix Cayman three years ago after John Varvatos Enterprises filed for bankruptcy in 2020.

Varvatos’ first products at Under Armor are slated to launch next summer, but much of his work won’t appear until fall 2024, according to WWD.
