During the investigation, a shocking truth emerges. The bank manager is affiliated with the Sinagra clan, one of the mafia families that Salvo has been hunting since his arrival in the city. It turns out that the one who was supposed to monitor the proper functioning of the credit institution is actually a loan shark. In practice, he applied usurious rates on loans requested by customers.
To build his theory, Montalbano investigates in and around Vigata, but above all in other lenders. In particular, in the branch of another bank. Establish a good relationship with the director Stella Parenti (Serena Iansiti), thanks to which it collects the necessary information. It should not be forgotten that he is a man who is particularly sensitive to female charm. And the step from business to private is short. He therefore he embarks on a relationship with Stella.

Who killed Corrado Militello?
Luckily for him, Salvo knows a great remedy for not dealing with personal problems: dive into work. Well, the bank theft changes the relationship between the Sinagras and the other mafia family present in the area: the Cuffaros. To restore balance, the two gangs reach an agreement. A sort of transaction, from which the title of the episode derives.

The victim is Corrado Militello, a retired doctor, killed by a gunshot. The matter gets complicated because, the day before the murder, the psychic Eva Richter (Paola Sambo) had recognized the person responsible thanks to her paranormal powers.
In fact, this is a lie. Eva Richter’s real name is Eva Riccardi and her life is intertwined with that of Militello. The story dates back to 1943, when the man had moved to northern Italy. Once enlisted in the black brigades, he had killed a partisan, namely the brother of the self-styled psychic. The motive, however, is not political. Riccardi’s blind rage had arisen from a love betrayal dating back to 1935. Therefore, who killed Corrado Militello?

Once the perpetrator is caught, Salvo has the opportunity to devote himself to his personal affairs. He understands that he is still in love with Livia. The distance has only sharpened the nostalgia and now he is looking for a solution so as not to lose the woman of his life. He decides to join her, in the hope that she reciprocates his feelings. He goes to the airport and takes the first flight to Genoa.
A few hours later, he arrives in Boccadasse, where his ex-girlfriend resides. She rings the intercom and when Livia arrives, it is clear that the flame of their love has not yet gone out. Many things have happened, perhaps too many, but one look is enough for Livia to run towards him and throw your arms around his neck. A long hug followed by a long kiss which closes the episode.
